REDLANDS, CA : Horses injured in Redlands freeway crash on Wednesday, January 11th 2017

Several show horses were hurt Wednesday morning when the trailer they were traveling in was involved in a crash on the 10 Freeway.

The crash was reported about 8 a.m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Orange Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A tractor-trailer lost control and swerved into the center divider before going back toward the slow lanes and sideswiping the large Brook Ledge Horse Transportation trailer, according to CHP Officer Brian Alvarez.

The horses were being transported from Seattle to Thermal for an event. The trailer was carrying seven horses, according to officials.

Carl Baker, Redlands spokesman, said three horses were injured and one was tranquilized so it could be treated for its injuries.

There were initial concerns that one of the horses might have to be put down, but Dr. Jade Johnston, a veterinarian at the scene, said it didn’t look like any of the horses would have to be euthanized.

The horse trailer was driven off the freeway to Stuart Street off of Orange Street to wait for assistance from the veterinarians and another transport vehicle.

A Redlands Animal Control officer on scene attempted to comfort one of the horses inside the trailer.

The crash resulted in 75 gallons of diesel fuel spilling on the roadway. Ten gallons ended up in a storm drain, officials said.

All but one lane was shut down as rescuers worked to get the vehicles off the freeway and help the injured animals, officials said.
