Plankinton, S.D : Mitchell woman injured in wrong way crash on I-90 west of Plankinton on Wednesday night, January 25, 2017
A Mitchell woman sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries in a Wednesday night crash in which she was traveling the wrong direction on Interstate 90.
A 2004 Chevy Venture driven by 42-year-old Tamara McLaughlin was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane near mile marker 303, or five miles west of Plankinton, when it approached a series of three semi trucks traveling in McLaughlin's direction. The first two semis were able to swerve around the car, but the third semi collided head-on with McLaughlin's vehicle, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
McLaughlin was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the 10:42 p.m. crash and was transported by ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell with serious injuries. Charges are pending against McLaughlin.
The 53-year-old female driver of the semi was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
Other responding agencies were the Aurora County Sheriff's Office, Plankinton Fire and Rescue and Plankinton Ambulance.
