PROSPECT, ME : Five injured in early morning Route 1 crash on Saturday, September 23rd 2017

Five people suffered injuries Sept. 23 when a driver failed to negotiate a turn near Penobscot Narrows Bridge.

Police said a 2006 Mercedes was traveling west on Route 1 at 12:45 a.m. when the driver failed to round a left sweeping turn. Four of the vehicle's occupants were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment, two by ambulance and two by Lifeflight helicopter, according to Waldo County Sheriff's Office.

A fifth occupant was taken to Waldo County General Hospital and later released, police said.

The Mercedes sustained significant front-end damage. The incident is still under investigation and no names are being released at this time. Speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash, police said.

Cpl. Gregory Jones is the primary investigator. He was assisted at the crash scene by Deputy Jeffery Rice, Penobscot Sheriff's Office, Stockton Springs Fire and Ambulance, Searsport Ambulance and Bucksport Ambulance.
