Oakland, CA : Caltrans investigating fallen fence, injury crash on I-880 on Monday October 26 2015
Authorities are still investigating what caused hundreds of feet of fencing to fall from an overpass onto Interstate 880, causing a multivehicle crash that injured several people Monday, a Caltrans spokesman said.
The state agency's employees were inspecting the overpass at 23rd Avenue on Tuesday, a day after the debris fell on the freeway near Oakland's Fruitvale district, spokesman Bob Haus said.
Crews there removed what was left of a chain-link fence and a metal bar on the south side of an overcrossing built in 1947, Haus said. They replaced the fencing with a temporary concrete barrier and closed off the structure's south side from pedestrians, he said.
Caltrans already had plans to renovate the aging overpass in 2017-18, Haus said.
Crews began similar renovations last year on the nearby 29th Avenue overcrossing, and will finish that job next summer, the spokesman said.
As Caltrans employees continued to inspect the 23rd Avenue overpass on Tuesday, Haus said it is too soon to say what caused the fallen debris, or how much it will cost to replace it.
The incident occurred at 6:30 p.m. Monday, when officers called to the scene found that 460 feet of fencing fell onto lanes on both sides of I-880, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The fencing struck about 10 vehicles, including one that caught fire, Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.
The vehicles' passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment, Wilkenfeld said. Police did not say how many people were injured.
All freeway lanes in both directions were closed immediately after the crash, as crews used power tools to take apart and remove the debris, Wilkenfeld said.
