South Phoenix, AZ : Bicyclist dies after being struck by SUV near 15th and Southern avenues on Thursday, 16th January, 2020

Police were investigating a fatal collision involving a bicyclist and an SUV Thursday evening in south Phoenix.

The collision happened about 5:30 p.m. near 15th and Southern avenues, when a bicyclist identified as Mario Hernandez Roman, 25, was in the two-way left turn lane and was struck by a white SUV headed eastbound on Southern Avenue, according to police.

The vehicle, damaged and leaking fluid, was found a short distance from the collision scene abandoned in a parking lot, police say.

Roman was taken to a hospital with numerous injuries, and he died a short time later, according to reports.

The registered owner of the SUV attempted to report the vehicle stolen, and according to investigators, it had not been determined who was driving it.

The investigation was ongoing, according to police.
