Willoughby, OH : Madison Township police probe fatal car-wheelchair crash on Tuesday, September 27, 2016

Investigators in Madison Township are looking into a Sept. 27 crash between a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu and a man on a motorized wheelchair, according to a statement from Madison Township police.

The incident happened in the 6800 block of Chapel Road shortly before Madison Township police and Madison Fire District personnel were called to the scene, the statement reads.

A man, 59, who was operating the wheelchair, was taken from the scene to the Lake Health Madison Emergency Department, where officials pronounced him dead, police report.

The 89-year-old driver of the Malibu was uninjured in the incident. Investigators say they do not believe alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation and is being handled by the Lake Regional Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, of which Madison Township police are members, according to the statement.
