San Jose, CA : Man suffers major injuries in a crash in the Alum Rock area Tuesday afternoon, August 23, 2016

A man suffered major injuries in a crash late Tuesday afternoon on Mt. Hamilton Road in the Alum Rock area, authorities said.

The collision was reported around 5:25 p.m. near Springview Lane, said San Jose fire Capt. Mitch Matlow.

Matlow said responding firefighters found a pickup truck about 100 feet below the roadway. The driver and sole occupant was ejected and suffered major injuries.

Firefighters conducted a low-angle rescue and lowered the man to an ambulance waiting another 50 feet below on a dirt road, Matlow said. The ambulance transported the man to an emergency utility vehicle, which then carried him to a helicopter near Three Springs Road.

California Highway Patrol Officer Damian Cistaro said the man was flown to Regional Medical Center in San Jose, where he was treated for major injuries. An update on his condition was not immediately available.

There were no injuries to any firefighters, but several of them contracted poison oak, Matlow said.

Mt. Hamilton Road was closed in both directions while the CHP investigated the crash and the truck was removed from the hillside, Cistaro said.

Firefighters also battled a tier-one vegetation fire around the same time near Singleton and Tuers roads in South San Jose. The blaze on a former landfill started in a homeless encampment and scorched about a quarter of an acre, Matlow said. No injuries were reported.
