Encinitas, CA : 29-year-old San Diego man dies in a rollover crash on Interstate 5 in Encinitas on Sunday morning, March 1, 2015
A 29-year-old San Diego man was killed Sunday morning in a rollover crash on rain-slicked Interstate 5 in Encinitas.
The driver of a 2002 Honda Civic and his passenger, a 29-year-old San Diego woman, hydroplaned and lost control while headed north approaching Birmingham Drive at about 6:50 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
The Honda struck the center divider at an estimated 70 mph and overturned, Bettencourt said.
The driver was trapped in the car and died at the scene. His name was not immediately available.
The passenger managed to crawl out of the wreckage and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to be treated for minor to moderate injuries, Bettencourt said.
Bettencourt said neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash.
The crashed vehicle initially blocked two lanes and a SigAlert was issued.
One lane was later reopened, the CHP said.
