Fredericksburg, VA : One killed, two face charges in Interstate 95 crashes in Fredericksburg on Wednesday, 31st August, 2016
Southbound Interstate 95 was shut down by a mess of motorcycles and tractor–trailers after a pair of early-morning crashes near State Route 3 Wednesday that left one man dead.
The crashes led to rush-hour-like congestion, only going in the opposite direction of the typical morning northbound commute.
The first crash happened shortly after 2:30 a.m. just north of the State Route 3 exit in the southbound lanes, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler.
A van pulling a trailer carrying five motorcycles was traveling slowly in the right lane when a tractor–trailer rear-ended the trailer, Tyler said. The crash sent several of the motorcycles into the roadway. The motorcycles, van and tractor–trailer ended up blocking all of the lanes.
As traffic slowed because of the debris, there was a chain-reaction crash involving three tractor–trailers.
Police said a tractor–trailer driven by Jonathan Saunders, 48, of Hampton ran into the back of one big rig, forcing it into the tractor–trailer in front of it. Saunders was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he died, Tyler said.
There were no other serious injuries, Tyler said.
In the first crash, the driver of the van, 33-year-old Charles Hoyle of North Carolina, was charged with impeding traffic for driving too slow. The tractor–trailer driver, Franklin Vanessendelet, 45, of Pennsylvania, faces a charge of reckless driving.
The investigation into the second crash continues. Troopers E.S. Frye and J.F. Poling are handling the crash investigations.
The crashes and ensuing cleanup and investigation forced a detour at the Route 3 exit, taking traffic to U.S. 1.
The lane closures and detour caused congestion on the interstate, Route 3, U.S. 1. and U.S. 17, local Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kelly Hannon said.
