Haywood County, NC : One person died after a fatal crash on I-40 West at the U.S. 23/74 Interchange Monday morning, April 11, 2016

A fatal crash in Haywood County prompted the North Carolina Department of Transportation to close all Westbound lanes along a portion of I-40 West at the U.S. 23/74 Interchange Monday morning.

A collision and subsequent fire occurred between a tractor-trailer and a white Dodge Ram 1500 mini-van near Exit 27 just after 3 a.m. after the driver of the van was driving East in the Westbound lane. Highway Patrol officials said the road did not fully reopen until at least 4 hours later.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Michele Mullinax, 43, of Bessemer City, was transported to Haywood Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the van, who died at the scene, will not be identified until dental records are examined. However, the medical examiner said it appears the victim is from out of state.
