Carlisle, SC : One dead in two-vehicle collision on SC 72 in Union County on Tuesday, July 12, 2016
A collision involving two vehicles that left one man dead is being investigated by the Union County Coroner’s Office and the SC Highway Patrol.
L/Cpl Tony Keller of the SCHP reported that the accident occurred on Tuesday around 5:15 p.m. on SC 72 one mile east of the Town of Carlisle. Keller said the accident involved an eastbound 2005 Freightliner Tractor-Trailer that had stopped for a flagman at a construction site. He said the Freightliner was then struck in the rear by an eastbound 1996 Ford Ranger pickup truck.
Keller said that the driver of the Freightliner, Jeffrey Brown, 56, Roanoke, Va. was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was not injured.
The driver of the pickup truck, however, was not as fortunate. Keller said the driver of the pickup was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. He said that while the driver of the pickup truck was not ejected from the vehicle, he was entrapped and mechanical means had to be used to extract him from the vehicle. After being extracted from the truck, Keller said the driver was transported by air to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
In a statement released this morning, Union County Coroner William Holcombe identified the deceased as Harold Thomas Johnson, 35, of Rock Hill.
Holcombe said that an autopsy had been scheduled to be performed today on Johnson’s body at Newberry Pathology Associates. He said no further information was available at the present time, but added that his office and the SCHP were continuing their investigation of the accident.
