Huntsville, TX : One killed in wreck on Interstate 45 near FM 1696 on Wednesday morning, September 14, 2016
A truck driver was killed on impact early Wednesday morning when the 18-wheeler he was driving rear-ended a trailer hauling cars through Huntsville.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, an 18-wheeler carrying six cars and a motorcycle was traveling south on Interstate 45 near FM 1696 when one of its tires blew out about 2:30 a.m. Police say the truck began to slow down when a United Parcel Service 18-wheeler slammed into the back of it.
The driver of the UPS truck, who was from Keller, died at the scene. The driver of the truck transporting cars and a motorcycle was treated for minor injuries at Huntsville Memorial Hospital and released Wednesday.
"For some unknown reason the UPS truck never slowed down," DPS Sgt. Steven McNeil said. "It actually ran up on the ramp of the car hauler and the cars on top fell down on what was left of the cab. It took five hours to clear the scene and reopen the interstate."
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, McNeil said.
While emergency responders were working the scene, a driver in another vehicle had health complications and collided with a Huntsville Police Department patrol unit. No one was reported injured.
"The traveler was from the Dallas area and had diabetic issues," Huntsville Police Lt. Jim Barnes said. "Thankfully no one was injured, just extensive damage to the vehicles."
