AKRON, OH : Two people killed in Akron crash involving fire truck identified on Friday, July 14, 2017
Officials have identified the two people who died Friday after an SUV drove through a red light and struck an Akron fire truck.
Briyana Hayes, 15, and Lashae Johnson, 16, died in the crash, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.
Eight people, including three firefighters, got hurt in the crash that happened at 3:45 p.m. on Rhodes Avenue at West Exchange Street, police said.
The firefighters suffered minor injuries, a police spokesman said.
The fire truck was driving on Rhodes Avenue when the SUV went through the red light on West Exchange Street, police said. The SUV hit the fire truck before it crashed into a utility police, police said.
The fire truck was in service but not responding to an emergency at the time, police said.
The city is conducting an investigation into the crash.
