Fort Lauderdale,FL: Bicyclist loses leg and dies in crash with SUV on March, Saturday 31th 2018
bicyclist’s leg was severed when he was hit by an SUV and thrown into a tree while trying to cross Sunrise Boulevard Saturday night, authorities said.
Wayne Miller, 53, of Fort Lauderdale, was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, said Gina Carter, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Miller was on the center median near the Swap Shop in the 1200 block of West Sunrise Boulevard when he entered the path of a BMW X5. As Miller tried to double back to the median, he got hit and thrown from his bike, Carter said.
The crash happened at 9:55 p.m. as Miller tried to cross the boulevard from south to north in unincorporated Broward County, Carter said.
Miller was struck in the left through lane, thrown into the eastbound lanes, hit the tree and landed back in the left through lane, Carter said.
The driver of the BMW, Joseph David Hall, 32, of Lauderhill, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Carter said. He was not injured.
Neither driver impairment nor excessive speed appeared to be factors in the crash, Carter said. The investigation is ongoing.
