Three people died when the car they were riding in left a roadway east of Stockton, crashed into a tree and split in two early Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The male driver and male and female passengers were all declared dead at the scene in a walnut orchard off Jack Tone Road north of Copperopolis Road. Their identities have not been released pending notification of family members.
According to the CHP, all three were riding in a 2002 black Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Jack Tone when, for unknown reasons about 1:45 a.m., it left the roadway to the east.
Visible signs at the crash scene show the car crossed over an irrigation ditch and slammed hard into a large walnut tree, severing the Honda into two large pieces. The second half traveled another 30 to 40 feet before coming to rest and becoming engulfed in flame.
