Billings,MT : Yellowstone County deputy injured, shots fired and four hurt in crash on June, Monday 26th 2017

A Yellowstone County Sheriff's deputy was injured late Monday after a traffic stop turned into a pursuit that ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into a South Side Billings business. That crash sent four people to an area hospital.

The deputy saw a black GMC Yukon with an apparently impaired driver near Hilltop Road and Main Street in the Heights just before midnight, said Sheriff Mike Linder. The SUV then ran a stop light.

The deputy tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle. During the pursuit, the Yukon turned into a cul-de-sac at Babcock Circle. At least two patrol cars tried to block in the suspect vehicle. One deputy left his car because he suspected the Yukon's occupants might run. The SUV then tried to drive over a lawn where the deputy was standing, said Mike Linder in a press release.

The deputy fired at least two shots at the charging vehicle, Linder said. The shots did not hit anyone. The deputy was knocked down, injuring his head, and was taken to a hospital, Linder said. The deputy's name and his condition had not been released as of 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The chase continued through Billings' South Side where the Yukon turned from Bruce Avenue onto Hallowell Lane where it lost control and it flipped, smashing into a brick building.

Four people in the Yukon, three women and one man, were taken to a hospital. The extent of the injuries are not known and no names are being released. At 5 a.m., the driver was still being treated, Linder said.
