Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana
A 30-year-old Lake Charles man died this weekend in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 eastbound near the Creole exit, state police said.
Sgt. James Anderson, spokesman for Troop D, said Michael Joseph Owens' body was found in the vehicle around 5:34 p.m. Sunday.
"Based on evidence at the scene and information provided by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office, the crash could have occurred 24-36 hours prior to being reported to us," Anderson said. " The vehicle (was) at the bottom of an embankment and was partially covered by a tree, making it difficult to see from the highway."
Owens was driving a 1997 Dodge Avenger eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the vehicle.
"The vehicle veered right across all lanes and traveled off of the right side of the highway," Anderson said. "The vehicle then rolled onto its side and impacted trees, crushing the roof and causing severe damage to the car."
Anderson said a toxicology sample will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis and the crash remains under investigation.
