Decatur,AL : Distracted driving caused fatal truck vs. bike crash on August, Wednesday 16th 2017

Distracted driving may have played a role in a fatal truck vs. bicycle crash that killed an Athens man earlier this month, according to a crash report.

The driver of a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge truck, 30-year-old Toney man Jacob Lewis, "was distracted by something inside the vehicle" and did not see Evaristo Ocampo, 66, riding a bicycle in the same direction, according to a crash report prepared by trooper Adriel Carr.

The collision happened on Alabama 127 near Sugar Hill Lane just after 8 a.m. Aug. 16, troopers said.

Both the truck and bicycle were traveling north on Alabama 127. The front right bumper of the Ford struck the rear wheel of the bicycle Ocampo was riding, according to the report.

Ocampo was thrown about 50 feet from the crash site and died instantly, said Limestone County Coroner Mike West. Ocampo came to rest to the right of the road, West said.

The Ford had to be towed from the scene due to disabling damage, the report said.

Trooper Curtis Summerville said Lewis has not been charged with a crime in connection to the collision, and Summerville did not know if any charges will be filed.
