Athens, GA : Athens-Clarke firefighter killed in accident on Tuesday, February 21st 2017
The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department announced on Tuesday that ACC firefighter Matt Hughes died from injuries sustained in an accident on Monday.
Hughes was off-duty helping a friend trim trees and was struck by a falling limb, according to WGAU. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he died.
On its Facebook page Tuesday, the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services broke the news of Hughes’ death.
“After a tragic accident yesterday while working an off duty job Firefighter II Matt Hughes has passed away. We would like to send or prayers and condolences to Matt’s family and friends. We will post funeral arrangements once they are know. R.I.P. Brother,” the post read.
Hughes has been with the ACC fire department since 2015. A 2007 graduate of Winder-Barrow High School, Hughes studied Fire Science Technology at Lanier Tecnical College and Architectural Drafting at Athens Tech.
Funeral arrangements were not available at this time.
