Springfield Township, OH : Man dead after head-on crash near Springfield High School in Summit County on Monday, January 5, 2015

A 77-year-old man is dead after a head-on crash Monday afternoon near Springfield High School in Summit County.

The Canton post of the State Highway Patrol responded to the site, on Canton Road south of Sanitarium, at 4:51 p.m.

According to the patrol, Robert Kroft, 77, of Louisville was driving south on Canton Road in a 2009 Ford Taurus when he went left of center, striking a northbound vehicle head on.

The northbound vehicle was a 1999 GMC Jimmy driven by David J. Fryberger, 37, of Akron.

Kroft was taken to Akron City Hospital, where he died.

Fryberger had very minor injuries and refused treatment. Both vehicles had severe damage.

Springfield Township police and EMS assisted at the scene. Canton Road was closed for about an hour.

Neither driver was wearing a seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
