Chico, CA : Pedestrian struck and killed by two cars on The Esplanade on Friday, June 10, 2016

The man who was struck and killed by two cars Friday on The Esplanade has been identified as Billy Abernathy, 55, of Chico, coroner’s officials said.

The Butte County Coroner’s Office said it will conduct an autopsy.

Chico police have said Abernathy was accidentally struck by two vehicles about 9:10 p.m. Friday on the bridge over Lindo Channel on The Esplanade.

Witnesses told the police that Abernathy had suffered major injuries and was unresponsive, according to a press release issued by the Chico Police Department.

The drivers of the two vehicles that struck Abernathy called 9-1-1 and remained at the scene, according to the release.

Firefighters and medics responded, and Abernathy was taken to Enloe Medical Center, where he died.

The Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team has been tasked with investigating the crash, according to the release.
