Sharon Twp, MI : 62-year-old Onsted man died after being hit by oncoming vehicle in Manchester on Wednesday morning, April 1, 2015

A 62-year-old man from Onsted was killed in a two-car crash at an intersection in Sharon Township late Wednesday morning.

Police have not released the name of the crash victim, who was westbound on Pleasant Lake Road in a Hyundai Sonata. According to witnesses, the man failed to stop at the intersection with M-52 just north of Manchester. East and westbound traffic have stop signs at the intersection while north and southbound traffic on M-52 are faced with blinking yellow lights at the intersection.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. when the driver of the Sonata entered the intersection and was struck by a 69-year-old woman who was traveling north on M-52 in a Chevrolet Traverse. The driver of the Traverse was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea with injuries that the Michigan State Police described as not life threatening.

The cars were taken off the road by the force of the crash and the Sonata nearly crashed into the historic Salem Church--now known as the Sharon United Methodist Church--that sits on the intersection.

MSP responded to the scene and was assisted by the Manchester Fire Department and Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office deputies. A Michigan Police accident reconstructionist was also at the scene.

The intersection was shut down temporarily after the crash and during the investigation but was reopened to controlled traffic early in the afternoon. The investigation into the incident continued as of 6 p.m. Wednesday.
