Morganton, NC : Woman injured in two-car collision on Saturday, March 18th 2017
Morganton, North Carolina
One woman was injured and taken to a local hospital after a two-car collision on Enola Road on Friday afternoon.
Janey Juger, 77, of Morganton, pulled out from Government Drive to cross Enola Road in her tan Buick around 4:08 p.m. when she was struck by John Stroup, 62, of Morganton, who was driving a white Chevy Silverado, according to Officer Kinard with Morganton Department of Public Safety.
Stroup was headed south on Enola Road toward the Interstate 40 onramp when Juger pulled out in his path, Kinard said.
"We have two different reports of what happened," Kinard said. "She either didn't stop at the stop sign or just pulled out in front of him from the stop sign. She definitely came out from the road in front of Stroup."
Juger was entrapped in the vehicle due to the extensive damage to the driver's side door, and had to be extracted by Burke County Rescue Squad.
"They ended up taking her out of the passenger side of the vehicle," Kinard said.
The woman then was taken to Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge for treatment, Kinard said.
Kinard said he didn't believe Juger's injuries to be too serious, despite the extensive damage to her vehicle.
"Obviously, seeing the wreck (impact), it seemed serious," he said. "She's very lucky not to be hurt worse than she was. I talked to her at the hospital and it seemed (her injuries were) minor."
Stroup, who is fire chief at Salem Fire and Rescue, said he was uninjured in the wreck. He said the woman pulled out in front of him as he was headed toward the highway.
"She didn't stop at the sign," he said.
"Stroup's wife, Kathy, came to the scene after he informed her of the wreck. She visibly was shaken over the collision.
"(John) seems OK, but I don't know yet," she said at the time. "I'm just worried about the condition of the other driver."
Stroup was on his way to teach a fire class at McDowell Technical Community College, Kathy Stroup said.
"Bless his heart. He's always helping other people (with his job)," she said. "He's worried about the woman, too."
Juger was charged with making an unsafe movement, Kinard said.
Responding agencies included MDPS, Burke County EMS and Burke County Rescue Squad.
