BAZETTA, OH : Champion officer in hospital after crash chasing suspect on May, Saturday, 13th 2017
A Champion Township police sergeant was sent to the hospital Saturday morning after crashing his car while trying to arrest a suspect.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Sgt. Jeff White was responding around 7:30 a.m. to help the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office arrest a man who crashed his vehicle, fled on foot and stole a gun from another vehicle in the area.
A police report states the man fled into the woods near state Route 45 and Bristol Champion Townline Road, where a manhunt ensued. Jamie Ray Butler, 24, of Ambridge, Pa., was later taken into custody and is at the Trumbull County Jail on charges of receiving stolen property, two counts of obstructing official business, three counts of theft and two counts of criminal trespassing.
White was traveling southbound on North Park Road and swerved to avoid another vehicle. His cruiser went off the left side of the road and overturned multiple times, according to the police report.
White was trapped in his crusier and had to be extricated by the Jaws of Life. He was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, the patrol said.
