Kailua Kona, HI : Bicyclist killed in Hilo crash on Wednesday, December, 6th 2017
A 70-year-old male bicyclist was killed this morning when struck by a car on Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19) on the northern outskirts of Hilo.
According to a written Hawaii Fire Department statement, the collision occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Hau Lane near Wainaku Executive Center.
The bicyclist was reportedly dead at the scene.
The car’s driver, a 26-year-old man, complained of neck pain and was taken to Hilo Medical Center.
Police closed the Hamakua-bound lanes of Highway 19 while they investigated the crash and diverted traffic to Wainaku Avenue via Hau Lane.
The death is the 32nd official traffic fatality of the year, compared to 30 at the same time last year. There also have been four vehicle-related deaths this year police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other two within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
