Frederick, MD : Gas line was severed Friday evening when a man drove a car into an apartment building at South Market and East South streets on September 12th 2014
A Texas man faces charges after he drove his car into a building Friday night and severed a gas line in downtown Frederick, police said.
One building and part of another were evacuated after Vershurn Juawn Martin, 37, of Houston, drove a four-door sedan into an apartment building at South Market and East South streets, striking a gas meter and severing a gas line, officials said.
A Frederick police officer, when speaking to the driver after the crash, smelled alcohol on him, police said. Martin was given field sobriety tests and then arrested and taken to Frederick Police Department headquarters.
Martin was charged with driving under the influence and driving while impaired, police said. He was taken to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for a hearing before a district court commissioner. Martin was later released after signing a written promise to appear in court, according to a jail official.
No one was injured in the crash, which occurred at about 10:45 p.m., said Jeremy Heflin, a manager at the Frederick County Department of Emergency Communications.
Evacuations were ordered for 128 S. Market St. and part of 148 S. Market St. while a Washington Gas crew repaired the leak. The buildings were reopened at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday, officials said.
