Storm Lake, IA : Two students killed in accident near Storm Lake on Monday, September 29, 2014
Two students from the Sioux Central Community School District are dead after two vehicles collided head-on near Storm Lake on Monday.
A pick-up going westward struck an eastbound car on 570th Street — a gravel road — half a mile east of County Road M-50, northeast of town.
The Buena Vista County Sheriff's Department was alerted to the accident at 10:44 a.m.
A 17-year-old male from Sioux Rapids and a 16-year-old female from Marathon were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The sheriff's department in a statement said the names of the two fatalities are being withheld until their next of kin are notified.
Two additional passengers in the car were also injured.
A 15-year-old female from Storm Lake was flown by helicopter to Sioux City by Mercy Air Care. Rose Joens, a 19-year-old woman from Schaller, was sent to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in an ambulance.
The truck's driver, Kent Erickson, a 43-year-old resident of Albert City, suffered minor injuries in the collision. His passenger, 49-year-old Trent Jackson, of Alta, was rendered unconscious in the accident and had to be removed from the vehicle by emergency responders.
The Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office and Iowa State Patrol are currently investigating the crash.
