Dakota Woman dies on Highway 77
Nebraska state troopers were working Thursday to determine what caused an accident near Atokad Park that claimed the life of a Dakota City woman.
M Lynn Moes, 66, was driving west through the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Atokad Drive about 12:30 p.m. when her car was hit by a northbound sport-utility vehicle, officials said.
Dakota County Sheriff Chris Kleinberg said a sheriff's deputy performed CPR, but Moes died at the scene.
Teresa Jones, a clerk at Pony Express, a gas station across the highway from the intersection, said she would like to see traffic lights or other signals installed there to increase safety. She said it's not uncommon to hear squealing tires or the sound of vehicles colliding.
"They're not always fatal like that, but there's always a lot of fender benders out there," she said.
Trooper Cody McGee said a decision about adding traffic signals would be up to the state Department of Roads.
“I’m all for highway safety,” he said. “If they want to put up stop lights, great. It is kind of a dangerous intersection. You’ve just got to tell people to be safe and cautious.”
