Orlando, FL : Wrong-way crash on Florida's Turnpike leaves 73-year-old woman dead on Tuesday, March 7th 2017
A 73-year-old woman died after her vehicle, which was traveling in the wrong direction, collided with a semi truck on Florida’s Turnpike early Tuesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Just before 2:30 a.m., the woman was traveling north in the southbound lanes of the turnpike near State Road 528, Trooper Steven Montiero said. The truck driver, 53-year-old Steven Arce of Winter Springs, was unable to avoid the Orlando woman’s Dodge Charger, resulting in a head-on collision, according to an FHP press release.
The truck then hit a metal guardrail and ended up in the center of the grassy median facing south.
Arce, who suffered serious injuries, was transported to Hunter’s Creek Emergency Room, according to the release.
The woman’s name has not been released because her next of kin hasn’t been notified of her death, troopers said. It’s unclear why she was driving on the wrong side of the road.
The accident is still under investigation.
