Asheville, NC : Multiple drivers injured, including police officer, in fiery crash on Long Shoals Road near the Ingles supermarket on Tuesday morning, February 24, 2015

Drivers in three vehicles, including an Asheville police officer in a patrol car, were injured when the vehicles crashed Tuesday morning on Long Shoals Road near the Ingles supermarket.

Police said the crash happened around 5:45 a.m.

The occupants of all three vehicles were taken to the hospital, officers said. There did not appear to be any life-threatening injuries.

Emergency dispatchers said the police cruiser caught on fire following the crash.

Police said weather appeared to be a factor.

The NC Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.

Long Shoals road was shut down in the area following the crash. Police said the road should reopen shortly after 8 a.m.

Officers advised drivers in the area to stay off the roads Tuesday morning unless they absolutely have to get out. Police said many roads were covered in snow and becoming slippery as vehicle traffic compacts the snow into an icy slush on the roads.
