PITTSFIELD, PA : Eagle employee injured in pressroom accident on Friday, 18th May 2018

A Berkshire Eagle employee was seriously injured Friday morning when he fell from a ladder in the pressroom of the South Church Street building.

The 25-year-old man was taken to Berkshire Medical Center with a head injury about 8:30 a.m. after falling from a ladder affixed to the side of a printing press, according to Human Resources Manager Catherine Wandrei.

Eagle executives declined to name the employee, citing privacy laws.

Police responded to the Eagle to investigate the fall, but a report was not available Friday, according to Sgt. James Parise. A condition report on the man was not available Friday evening.

Andrew Swanton, who oversees employees in the Eagle's pressroom, described the man as "a dedicated and positive employee with an upbeat attitude."

The employee, who is a press trainee, is the son of a longtime Eagle pressman and works alongside another one of his relatives, Swanton said.

In an email to staff Friday, New England Newspapers Inc. President and Publisher Fredric D. Rutberg noted the family's history with the company.

"Although he has only worked in our pressroom for 2 years, [he] has long been a part of the NENI work family," Rutberg wrote in the email. "I hope that everyone who reads this item will say a prayer or send out a healing thought ... and that he will have a speedy and complete recovery."

Kevin Moran, executive editor of The Eagle, echoed Rutberg's hope for the employee's recovery.

"We're a small organization," Moran said Friday afternoon from his office. "When accidents like this happen, it hits home."
