New Orleans police are investigating a collision that left two people dead Saturday afternoon at the I-610 East and Franklin Avenue exit.The driver of a black GMC Yukon XL lost control and veered off the exit head-on into a cement beam underneath the I-10 around 5:30 p.m., police said. The vehicle then caught fire with the driver and passenger still inside.
Police said they received calls regarding the same GMC Yukon XL driving recklessly minutes prior to the crash, though they had not yet determined the cause of the crash by late Friday.
The identities of the driver and passenger have not been released. The Franklin Avenue off-ramp was reported closed at 6:15 p.m., but was reported to have reopened by 8:40 p.m., according to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
