Sacramento, CA : Wrong-way driver dead in I-5 collision near Lodi early friday morning on May 9th 2014

One person was killed in three-car collision in which a driver was traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 5 near Lodi early Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP spokesman James Smith said a driver in a Plymouth was heading southbound on northbound I-5 when they collided head-on with a Kenworth traveling north. The Kenworth then veered across the center median into the southbound lanes where it struck a Ford head-on. A short time later, a person driving a Toyota southbound struck the Kenworth which had come to a rest blocking the southbound lanes.

The driver of the Plymouth was killed in the wreck. Due to the damage sustained by the vehicle, it was unclear whether the driver was wearing their seat belt, Smith said.

All lanes of southbound I-5 and one lane of northbound I-5 were closed for an extended period due to cleanup and investigation efforts.

Smith said it was unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
