A Thibodaux man has died after his vehicle crashed into a canal in Choctaw.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office says 41-year-old Eric Laughlin crashed around 11:15 p.m. Monday.

A firefighter with the Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department noticed an overturned vehicle in the canal and deputies responded and found Laughlin still in the submerged vehicle about 50 feet from the bank.

An investigation revealed Laughlin, who was not wearing a seat belt, failed to negotiate a turn, sending the vehicle crashing into the canal. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
