Patchogue, NY : Man suffers critical injuries in crash on Sunrise Highway in Patchogue on Tuesday, Oct 6, 2015

Suffolk County police are investigating a crash that critically injured a Long Island man.

Robert Hommel was driving on Sunrise Highway in Patchogue when he passed a marked police car and crashed into a cement column. He was thrown through the open sun roof of his car.

Authorities say the 29-year-old Mastic man was speeding when the accident happened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Hommel was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for treatment.
