METHUEN, MA : Two people were sent to the hospital on Monday, June 12, 2017
Two people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries after the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a telephone pole on Merrimack Street (Route 110) early Monday afternoon, police said.
The crash, which occurred around 1:08 p.m., cracked the telephone pole and left wires hanging over the roadway.
Traffic is being diverted from Merrimack Street in the area of Walton Avenue and Wingate Avenue while Verizon and National Grid crews deal with the pole, Capt. Randy Haggar said around 2 p.m., adding that he expected the road to be closed for a couple of hours.
Haggar said the driver of the car, a man, told police that preceding the crash he had been fumbling with his radio and not looking at the roadway. The vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic and, to avoid hitting a vehicle head-on, the driver veered off the other side of the road where he struck a telephone pole, Haggar said.
The driver and a passenger were transported to Lawrence General Hospital with minor injuries, Haggar said. They were not identified further early Wednesday afternoon.
No charges had been filed early Wednesday afternoon, police said.
