Tampa, FL : Tampa preschool canceled after car crashes into classroom on August 29th 2014.
A Tampa preschool and after-school care center will be closed Friday after a suspected drunk driver crashed through the building.
It happened Friday at 3:39 a.m. at the Achievement Center for Early Learning at 4609 E. Busch Boulevard. No one was inside at the time.
Tampa Police say the driver, Haley Burgess, 20, and passenger, Candy Lynn, 31, were taken to Tampa General Hospital as trauma alerts. Burgess is now in critical condition, but is expected to survive. Lynn suffered less severe injuries.
The damage to the building is substantial. The gray Toyota sedan crashed right through the brick wall into the VPK classroom. Chairs, papers, and toys are now scattered all over the floor.
The Achievement Center owner Vincent Hernandez says about 70-80 children under 5 are inside the building during the day. Elementary students are also bused to the center for after-school care.
"It's very scary," he said. "I'm just glad it happened when no one was here."
Hernandez says the Achievement Center will remain closed all day Friday. They have also decided to close Monday for Labor Day. Parents are asked to call the center over the weekend at (813) 501-3960 to listen for updated messages about Tuesday.
