Carlsbad, NM : Carlsbad police address traffic accident on Friday, January, 12th 2018

According to the Carlsbad Police Department, 866 motor vehicle crashes occurred in Carlsbad in 2017.

Twenty-two percent of reported crashes occurred on South Canal Street between Lea Street and U.S. Highway 285 leading to the Village of Loving.

"The majority of these crashes were preventable as they were caused by drivers following too closely, failing to yield or careless (and) distracted driving," read a news release.

The Carlsbad Police Department is hoping to decrease the number of traffic accidents on South Canal Street through the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program.

The program, which places extra patrols on the street, will operate through Jan. 19.

Police urged residents to be aware as they drive and to follow traffic laws.

“Citizens can do their part by simply slowing down, being courteous of other drivers and devoting their full attention to the road," said Chief Kent Waller in a news release.
