Fatal crash in Charles City killed two people
State Police continue to investigate a single vehicle fatal crash on John Tyler Memorial Highway near Wilcox Neck Road in Charles City County.
Troopers say at approximately 3:15 a.m. Sunday they responded to the scene after the driver of a 2004 Ford F-150 was traveling westbound and ran off the road. They say the driver went off the right side of Route 5, overcorrected, then ran off the left side of the roadway striking a tree. The impact with the tree caused the vehicle to catch fire.
The driver and his passenger died at the scene. The men were taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for positive identification and to determine the cause and manner of death.
Identity of the deceased is pending positive identification by the medical examiner's office and next of kin notification.
Route 5 was closed for five and a half hours to allow for the on-going crash investigation.
