MAPLEWOOD, OH : Six people were injured after the horse-drawn buggy they were riding in was struck by another vehicle on Thursday, July 6, 2017
Six people were injured after the horse-drawn buggy they were riding in was struck by another vehicle Thursday morning.
The crash, which was located in the 22000 block of state Route 47 in Shelby County, near the Logan County line, split the buggy into two pieces. The vehicle reportedly struck the back of the the buggy.
Two nurses — Susie Wilkins, of Lewistown, and Jenny Bell, of Huntsville — were driving to Sidney when they saw the crash. Wilkins and Bell, along with an EMT who arrived in his own car, were among the first to provide treatment for the injured.
“It was mass confusion,” said Wilkins as they encountered the crash. “The wagon was overturned and the patients were scattered about. We know there were six injured and they were all from the buggy.”
Wilkins, who is also certified trauma nurse, said she has never encountered a situation like the one Thursday morning outside an emergency room setting. The nurses, who are employed by Heartland Hospice, said they were in the “right place at the right time” to assist the crash victims.
“It was due diligence,” said Bell. “Nurses doing what they do (in an emergency).”
Local resident Hannah Gold said she heard the crash from inside her home.
“I didn’t see it but we’re used to semis going by here,” said Gold. “I heard a crash that’s not normal.”
Gold said she ran out of the house and saw the crash and the people laying in and around the buggy.
“There were other people there already on their phones so I went back in and got blankets, towels and water for them.”
Gold said the Amish family had just moved into a farm on state Route 47.
Diana Reineke, who is Gold’s grandmother and lives in the house next to her, said they were concerned before the crash about the fast-moving vehicles and how they would react with the Amish buggies now traveling the road.
Both Gold and Reineke said they want to see slow-moving vehicle signs with buggies on them put along the road.
Sherry Vondenhuevel, of Quincy, said she got there right after the crash happened.
“That poor woman and her babies,” said Vondenhuevel. “It was terrible.”
The crash is under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Assisting at the scene was the Ohio Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Transportation, along with Port Jefferson Fire, Maplewood Fire, Indian Lake Rescue, Anna Rescue, Sidney Rescue and Perry Port Salem Rescue.
