NEWPORT, RI : Car crashes into Bellevue liquor store; no injuries reported on Thursday, 30th August 2018
No injuries were reported after a 2007 Honda Civic crashed into a window at Vickers’ Liquors, near Micki’s Laundromat, on Thursday about 10:13 a.m.
Newport Fire Department Deputy Chief David Murphy said according to interviews at the scene, the driver of the car — a woman in her 70s — hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing the car to collide with the window.
“There was no structural damage,” he said, noting that the building inspector surveyed the damage after the accident. “She just took out two panes of the safety glass, and a bunch of beer and wine on the back shelves got damaged.”
Elizabeth Moniz, the store’s general manager, said the accident was obviously a surprise to her and other employees working there.
“I was in the back room and I heard a loud bang, and I thought, ‘Oh, my God,’” she said. “My sales guy was running up the aisle, and you could hear tires going and the smell of an engine. It was kind of surreal.”
Murphy said the woman was uninjured and did not require a hospital transport. Moniz said nobody was in that area of the store at the time. The store reopened shortly after the accident, and Moniz said the car was towed from the scene shortly before noon. According to Newport police, no arrests or citations were made.
