Cody, WY : Several injured after a two-vehicle collision in Yellowstone National Park on Friday, July 8, 2016

A heavily traveled Yellowstone National Park main road was closed for about an hour Friday after a two-vehicle collision resulted in serious injuries requiring life flight rescues.

The site of the accident on the Park’s Grand Loop Road was north of Old Faithful, but near Midway Geyser Basin, the location of the Grand Prismatic Spring.

Those are two of the most popular attactions inside the nation’s oldest national park.

The road was shut down by officials between Fountain Freight Road and the geyser basin.

During this summer of the 100th anniversary of the Park Service visitation is on record pace at Yellowstone.

At times the main parking lot has seen overflow traffic. Also, the road next to Midway Geyser Basin has become a place of supplemental parking for those who wish to visit the thermal features nearby but cannot get into the adjacent lot.

The extra-curricular parking has narrowed room on the two-lane road.

Investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing.
