Albany, NY : Man charged with DWI for causing 5 car crash at Holland Tunnel on Saturday, December 10th, 2016
A Middlesex County man has been charged with DWI for causing a five car crash inside the Holland Tunnel on Saturday afternoon, police said.
The crash was reported at 12:50 p.m. in the south New York bound tube, Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.
Officers on patrol had to respond to the crash on foot because of heavy traffic. When they arrived inside the tunnel, they found 22-year-old Kauri Qualls Jr., of Metuchen trying to leave the scene, Pentangelo said.
Qualls was driving a 1999 Honda Civic that was still in drive and propped up against a Chevrolet SUV. Pentangelo said three other cars were involved in the crash and no injuries were reported. Police said Qualls had bloodshot eyes and his speech was slurred. The 22-year-old refused to take a field sobriety test, the spokesman said.
Qualls was arrested and charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, improper passing, and was issued a ticket for not having a front license plate, Pentangelo said.
The south tube was closed for about a half hour while police investigated the crash.
