Lake Wildwood, CA : Lake Wildwood man killed in solo crash Friday morning on July 11, 2014
A Lake Wildwood man was killed in a solo crash Friday morning after he drifted off the road and ended up crashing into a culvert.
David Ostrander, 69, was driving a Honda CR-V southbound on Lake Wildwood Drive, north of Lake Forest Drive, at 9:10 a.m. at an unknown speed, according to the California Highway Patrol.
“I don’t think anyone actually saw the accident,” said Alan Chidley, who ran out when he heard the crash and came to Ostrander’s aid.
According to the CHP, the Honda drifted off the west side of the road as it curved, struck a juniper bush, then drifted back to the left and ran into a gravel ditch, where it collided with a wooden culvert and the edge of an asphalt driveway.
Ostrander was trapped in the driver’s seat and had to be extricated by Penn Valley Fire personnel.
Chidley said he ran down to the Honda and found Ostrander unconscious.
“I tried to get him to talk,” he said. “I was trying to reassure him, keep him hanging on. I was holding his head, trying to stabilize him.”
According to Chidley, Ostrander was wearing his seatbelt, but it did not appear that the air bag deployed.
“That likely would have saved his life,” Chidley said.
Ostrander was flown by CalStar helicopter to Sutter Roseville medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, according to the CHP.
