Boise, ID : Idaho couple killed in multi-vehicle Hyde Park crash on Thursday February 23rd 2017
An elderly couple from Franklin has died and others were seriously injured Thursday morning in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down all four lanes of U.S. 91 in Hyde Park for several hours.
According to North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes, Robert Haworth, 85, died at the scene and his wife, 78-year-old Henriette Haworth, died at the hospital.
Hawkes said Karrie Haueter of Smithfield was traveling southbound in the inside lane when she lost control of her 1999 Toyota Camry on the wet and slushy roads. Her car slid into the path of a Logan city garbage truck that was in the inside northbound lanes.
Jon Titus of Smithfield, who was traveling behind Haueter, veered to the left to avoid the crash, but he also collided with the garbage truck.
The Haworths, in a 1998 Cadillac DeVille, were also traveling southbound.
“It is assumed that the driver, in an attempt to slow or stop for the accident that was occurring in front of him, ended up stopped across the southbound lanes of traffic facing east/west,” Hawkes stated in a press release Thursday afternoon.
Another southbound driver, Shannleigh Gubler of Smithfield, was in a 2016 Toyota Tacoma. She was unable to avoid the collision in front of her, and her truck hit the Cadillac broadside in the driver’s side door, before she too was struck by the garbage truck.
Hawkes said the garbage truck continued to travel off the road and collided with a power transformer that supplies businesses on the west side of the highway.
Haueter was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, and Gubler was treated and released at the scene, Hawkes said. Titus was also released at the scene, according to a family member.
Debris from the crash and the resulting investigation required the full closure of U.S. 91 from 2500 North to 3700 North until about noon.
Hawkes said there are few options for moving traffic to the west, so all of that traffic was moved to the east, sending heavy volumes of traffic into Hyde Park and North Logan neighborhoods.
North Park officers, assisted by officers from every agency in the valley, helped direct traffic and responded to a number of other minor collisions that resulted with the detour.
