A pregnant woman died and another woman suffered life-threatening injuries after an accident on Interstate 85 early Sunday morning.
The Belmont Police Department said the accident occurred when the vehicle went off the road and crashed into the exit 27 sign while exiting I-85 north. The sign was made of concrete and metal.
Police said the passenger Heather Lockard, 21, of Kernersville, North Carolina, was taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center where she died. She was seven months pregnant and the baby also died.
The driver of the vehicle, Brenda Parrish, 55, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center. Parrish suffered serious injuries and is listed in critical condition.
At the time of the accident two toddlers were in the back seat of the car. Both survived and the children were transported to Caramont Regional Medical Center. One child suffered facial trauma and a broken wrist. Both children were in car seats at the time of impact.
The cause of the accident has not been determined. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is assisting the Belmont Police Department in the investigation.
