Smithfield, NC : Woman seriously injured in car crash on Rte. 295 Wednesday September 9 2015

Police are looking for anyone who witnessed a crash on Rte. 295 north Wednesday that left a North Providence woman seriously injured.
On Sept. 9, at 4:42 p.m., state and local officers responded to the car crash. An initial investigation revealed that a blue Ford SUV, being operated byDebra White, age 61, of 1445 Douglas Ave. in North Providence, was traveling north on Rte. 295 in the far right breakdown lane just before the Farnum Pike overpass. The SUV made an abrupt cut to the left and traveled across all northbound lanes of travel, according to police. As the vehicle entered the middle travel lane, its left rear driver’s side made contact with the right front passenger side of a GMC pickup truck, forcing it to veer to the left off the roadway. The SUV continued onto the median strip and struck a rock wall embankment. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to roll over onto its roof and ignite. The surrounding trees and brush rapidly caught fire and the fire began to spread.
White was wearing a seatbelt and was briefly trapped inside the vehicle before passersby were able to remove her from the vehicle. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with significant injuries and is reported to be in stable condition. Emergency fire personnel from Smithfield and Johnston subsequently arrived on scene and were able to extinguish the fire.
The operator and lone occupant of the GMC had been wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
The quick action of bystanders, as well as the prompt response from the Johnston and Smithfield Fire Departments, aided in minimizing injuries and containing the large brush fire, said police. Various lanes of Rte. 295 North were closed for about one hour while the fire was extinguished and the cars were removed.
