A Hattiesburg man is dead following an early morning crash in Forrest County.

Coroner Butch Benedict said the deadly crash happened around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the northbound lanes of Highway 49 near Walls Creek.

Benedict said an SUV being driven by 42-year-old James Jefferson left the roadway and hit a tree. Jefferson was pronounced dead at the scene, Benedict said.

The crash is being investigated by Mississippi Highway Patrol.
