GUNTER, TX : Morning crash in Gunter kills 2 on Friday, 14th October 2016
The drivers of two vehicles were killed Friday morning after a head-on collision in Gunter.
A black Jeep Grand Cherokee was headed southbound on State Highway 289 as a gold Chevrolet Suburban was traveling northbound. Gunter Police Chief Curtis Dinger said the Jeep crossed into the northbound lane, and the two vehicles collided head-on shortly before 6 a.m. The wreck occurred north of Mackey Road and south of Savage Road.
The collision cause the suburban to roll, Dinger said, and both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified the Suburban driver as Laura Smith-Otwell, 43, of Celina. The driver of Jeep was identified as Deanna Powell, 40, of Howe.
A teenage passenger was also inside the Jeep and was transported by helicopter to a Dallas area hospital. Dinger said it appears she will be OK and that the airlift was more of a precautionary measure.
The investigation is still ongoing, Dinger said, and the Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers will perform an accident reconstruction. Highway 289 was closed for multiple hours as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
