Tyler Rowser of the North Summit Fire Department says a semitrailer carrying cleaning chemicals and about 500 car batteries had parked on the shoulder after it blew a tire Wednesday morning. Authorities say another truck hit the back of the stopped trailer at about 5 a.m. and both went up in flames.
Rowser says other motorists who witnessed the crash pulled the driver out of the parked truck. The man was airlifted to University Hospital in critical condition.
The fire initially shut all lanes of I-80 in the area, but transportation officials started reopening lanes later in the morning.
